I was old enough to know better
Hey that never stopped me before
I was already tryin to forget her
Before she walked in through the door

I drank up a little assurance
Stepped right up smooth on her right
Let myself go with the currents
Leaned in to give her a light

 She smoked American Spirits
 She had American style
She said "You'll never get near it
But sit and talk for a while."

Whenever I see that logo again
It takes me back like a madeleine
Drift right back, turn on a dime
Back to the scene of the crime

Tip glows red, ashes and beer
Barman says "You can't smoke here"
She says "I'm smokin all the time"
Says she's smokin all the time

 Cause she has American Spirit
She has American style
She says "You'll never get near it
But sit and talk for a while."

 She had American Spirit
 She had American style
She said "You'll never get near it
But sit and talk for a while."

I don't know the last time I seen her
Maybe things worked out all right
I got off with a misdemeanor
Still was a hell of a night
Still was a hell of a night

She smoked American Spirits
 She had American style
She said "You'll never get near it
But sit and talk for a while."

 She has American Spirit
 She has American style
She says "You'll never get near it
But sit and talk for a while.
Sit and talk for a while."
 With me

Granville Street is filthy if you're from Halifax If you're from the States, it looks so clean We met for coffee, did the crossword side by side Pheromones combining with caffeine I watched you sideways as you worked nineteen across Wisp of hair fell across your eye State of closeness, state of warmth Starts with "I" Six blanks, and then it ends with "y" Cherry Blossoms fall on Comox Street Bonfire down on English Bay Drinking Kokanee on a driftwood bench I fell in love with you today I fell in love with you today Squirrels in Nelson Park watch me walk to work Brought peanuts in the shell with me today I keep em like the smile I keep just for you Waiting for the words you're gonna say Cherry Blossoms fall on Comox Street Bonfire down on English Bay Drinking Kokanee on a driftwood bench I fell in love with you today I fell in love with you today I fell in love with you today

Half-empty glass sitting on the shelf Some half-empty promise I could make With a little frosting on your fingertips You pull the candles from the cake And all at once I see how the story ends The story right there in your eyes I can see the big plot twist comin up I can see The October surprise There are shadows now, hiding things from me Shadows falling everyplace I turn the light back on and I look around the room Shadows still there on your face We were young --- we had fun You had fun --- with me But it's clear --- all my fear Nothin here --- to see It was summer when you and I first met Night-blooming jasmine had its way Remember, you asked me what I thought true love might be And I'm still thinking what to say Looking back on it, all the lows and highs That first day, what did we see? It wasn't stars, it was fireworks in our eyes Now it's just The October surprise Now it's just The October surprise And now I see The October surprise First time I see The October surprise First time I see The October surprise First time I see First time I see First time I see

Loon Echo 04:06
Every summer we'd all race To the promised land in Carleton Place Stop at The Stand, stretch our bones Get comic books and ice cream cones Counting horses, counting graves Good old a.m. radio waves Memories in Kodachrome Wave at the folks in the old folks' home Chorus: Loon Echo, hear me call Years gone by, the world got small Take me back, before it all Forty miles from Ottawa S-bend curves and Michael's cove Rocky point, crabapple grove Fat tabby suns on the old dirt road Way too lazy to chase a toad Counting horses, counting graves Good old a.m. radio waves Memories in Kodachrome Wave at the folks in the old folks' home

Bloodshot headlights out blue lights make no sound the demon inside your head, giving you shit again we're only as sick as our secrets as our secrets live Going home all broken Wrong way driver down It's not ok, it's never been ok Wrong way 80 between the lines back of hi-way signs the demon through my eyes, with rear-view alibi's one more shot, one more shot, don't blame me forget me not Going home all alone Wrong way driver gone It could've been worse, it could've been a hearse Wrong way Shame at the speed of sound going south northbound It's the demon inside your brain giving you shit again Going home all broken Wrong way driver down It could've been worse, it could've been a hearse Wrong way driver Wrong way driver I want to go home I wanna go Wrong way driver Wrong way driver I want to go home I'm going home... Wrong Way, wrong way Wrong Way driver Wrong way, wrong way Wrong way driver

Goodbye 74 04:21
Quiet summer night Blinds were swaying Gently in the wind Sounded like a ghost Goodbye seventy-four Too young to know time is passing Green light in the dark We talked all through the night Counting down the hits Had to hear number one Goodbye seventy-four Goodbye to the songs we once knew Wish I could call you now See if you remember Feeling something leave You never knew was there Goodbye nineteen seventy-four Goodbye, the songs we once knew Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Goodbye, the songs we once knew The songs we once knew The songs we once knew

There's the lonely astronaut Rebel with no cause Breaking records, now he's caught Breaking all of Newton's laws Brushing past those nebulae Where you goin now? Spaceman gonna do and die Spaceman show us how Out there past the heliopause Where you going next? Mass approaching infinite Time becomes compressed Now you're drifting out of sight Now you're drifting out of sight Against black velvet diamonds bright Vacuum's got no sound Blinding quasars with your light Tell us what you found Out there past the heliopause Where you going next? Mass approaching infinite Time becomes compressed Now you're drifting out of sight Now you're drifting out of sight Out there past the heliopause Where you going next? Mass approaching infinite Time becomes compressed Blinding quasars with your light Now you're drifting out of sight Now you're drifting out of Out of sight out of time Out of sight out of time Out of sight out of time

Ghost Ship 04:33
Dishes in the sink cause he left in a hurry Sent her a text so she wouldn't worry She slept all night, never knew he didn't come home Wakes in the morning and she sees the story Someone crying, someone says they're sorry Someone stays so she doesn't have to be alone Valley of grief and a mountain of anger An old lullaby that her mother sang her The needle stabs of everybody bein so kind She cleans things up but leaves his mug on the counter The last thing he touched before he left without her Apartment's full of things that he left behind Chorus: Ghost ship sailing on a starry night Sirens singing by the cold moonlight Been a million years between now and then I never thought I'd never see you again Ev'ry day in the news it's the only headline Ev'ry night she feels the dread at bedtime In the morning, the emptiness hits her the worst For those first few days, she believed he'd come Now she drinks up the pain that'll never numb She sings for him til she thinks her lungs will burst Chorus x2

about

Inspired by a chance collaboration with Oakland-based graphic novelist Derek McCulloch, who provided lyrics for 10 of the 11 tracks, Memories In Kodachrome is Richard's debut solo effort. The record is Oakland proud indy rock-power pop-psychedelic americana featuring a host of Bay Area musicians on everything from guitars, pedal steel, cello, theremin, accordion, backing vocals and a youth chamber choir.
Special guest, Jeff Ament lends a hand on fretless bass as well. Stuverud is featured on vocals, acoustic guitars, keys and drums, with songwriting inspiration by favorites Paul Westerberg (Replacements) and Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse).
